Hospice Volunteers
Give the Gift of Your Presence.
At Compassionate Care, hospice volunteers help bring comfort, companionship, and calm to patients and families during one of life’s most tender seasons. Through simple acts of presence and kindness, they become a valued part of the care experience.
Why Volunteer
Feel Called to Serve?
Hospice volunteers offer one of the most meaningful gifts there is: their time. They bring comfort, companionship, and a steady presence to patients and families during some of life’s most tender moments. Whether sitting with someone who might otherwise be alone, giving a caregiver time to rest, or simply sharing a cup of coffee and conversation, volunteers make a difference in deeply human ways. No medical background is required. All you need is compassion, reliability, and a few hours a week to show up for someone who needs it.
Compassionate & Dependable
You show up on time, follow through, and treat every patient and family with respect.
A Compassionate Listener
Sometimes, the most meaningful support is simply being present, listening with patience, and offering comfort without needing to have all the answers.
Team-Minded
Collaborate with our hospice team and follow guidance to ensure every patient receives safe, supportive care.

Wherever You’re Comfortable
Serve in the setting that feels right for you, whether that’s with patients and families, in our offices, or at community events across California.
I started volunteering because I wanted to give back. What I didn't expect was how much I'd receive in return, the conversations, the gratitude, the chance to be useful in someone's hardest moment. It's become one of the most meaningful parts of my week.

FAQ
Common Questions.
Do I need medical experience?
No. Most volunteer roles do not require a medical background. We provide the orientation, guidance, and support you need to feel comfortable, prepared, and confident in your role.
How much time does it take?
Most volunteers give 2–4 hours per week. We’ll work with your schedule and help find a role that fits naturally into your life.
Is there training?
Yes. Every volunteer completes orientation before their first visit, with continued education and support along the way. You’ll never be expected to step into this work alone.
Who can volunteer?
Most volunteer roles are open to adults 18 and older. Some administrative and community event opportunities may be available to high school students with parent or guardian permission.
What if I don't know anyone facing a terminal illness?
That’s completely okay. Many volunteers begin without personal hospice experience. What matters most is compassion, presence, and a willingness to learn.
Are background checks required?
Yes. Volunteers serving in patient-contact roles complete a standard background check and TB screening. Compassionate Care covers the cost.
Is this a religious program?
No. Compassionate Care welcomes volunteers of all faith traditions, spiritual backgrounds, and those with no faith tradition. Every patient and family is met with respect.
